约翰逊将首相位置“拱手相让”，前财政大臣苏纳克稳了

"That's why I am standing to be leader of the Conservative Party and your next prime minister." Sunak was defeated by Truss in the race to replace Boris Johnson in September after losing an election held by members of the Conservative party across the country.

Even before declaring on Sunday, Sunak had received more support from Conservative lawmakers than his rivals - former defence minister Penny Mordaunt and Johnson, who is attempting a comeback.

Sunak quit Johnson's government in July, helping trigger a rebellion that bought him down. "There will be integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level of the government I lead and I will work day in and day out to get the job done," he said in a statement.

Boris Johnson pulled out of the race late Sunday, averting a contest between the two men that threatened to split the ruling Conservative Party and further roil financial markets. And he added that “you can’t govern effectively unless you have a united party in parliament.”

The decision by Mr. Johnson leaves Mr. Sunak as the heavy favorite to replace Liz Truss in the top job. On Sunday Mr. Sunak had at least 128 public backers, while Ms. Mordaunt had around 23 supporters out of 357 Tory lawmakers, according to the British Broadcasting Corp.

约翰逊的决定让苏纳克成为接替利兹·特拉斯的热门人选。据英国广播公司报道，上周日苏纳克至少有128名公开的支持者，而莫当特在357名保守党议员中只有大约23名支持者。

It is unclear, however, how many of Mr. Johnson’s backers will now throw their support behind Ms. Mordaunt, a former defense minister. If Ms. Mordaunt does clear the nomination threshold by the Monday afternoon deadline, then the Conservative Party’s 170,000 members would pick a winner by Friday, and analysts say either candidate could win.

然而，目前尚不清楚约翰逊的支持者中有多少人会支持前国防部长莫当特。如果莫当特在本周一下午的最后期限前通过了提名门槛，那么保守党的17万名成员将在周五前选出一名获胜者，分析人士表示，那时候任何一名候选人都可能获胜。

From the first television debate with Ms. Truss, when he described her plans as a “fairy tale,” to the final days of the contest, when he said he “struggled to see” how Ms. Truss’s tax cuts and spending plans would “add up,” he sounded the alarm.

For the past six weeks, Mr. Sunak has been lying low as his economic predictions have played out at a dizzying speed. Investors balked at Ms. Truss’s widespread tax cuts and increased borrowing; the pound slumped; government borrowing costs soared; the mortgage market was upended; and the central bank had to intervene.

Clearly, a lot of people are now thinking, he was right and Truss was wrong and they’ve proved that in spades. The U.K. has paid a high price for that and will continue to pay a high price for that lost credibility.

He now is the front-runner in the number of members of Parliament who have publicly committed to him, ahead of the leader of the House of Commons, Penny Mordaunt. He added that he wanted to “fix our economy” and that he had a track record of delivery.
